Becoming a Precinct Election Official
The Clayton County Auditor’s Office accepts applications for election day
precinct election officials on an ongoing basis. This is an important and exciting way to
participate in democracy. Precinct election officials receive compensation for their time.Elections are at the core of our system of government. Seeing to it that
everyone’s right to vote is protected - and that we as a people are protected
against voter fraud - is not a responsibility to be taken lightly. We are
prepared to give you training if you are prepared to take the responsibility.
Who Can Be A Precinct Election Official
- Registered voters of Clayton County, Iowa.
- To participate in the Primary and General elections,
you may need to be registered with a party affiliation
- Persons with transportation to go to the polling
place and to the Precinct Election Official School of Instruction.
- Persons who are not candidates or a close relative of
a candidate
- Persons able to work long hours
- Persons who enjoy people and service to others
What A
Precinct Election Official Does

Opens polling place one hour before the polls open on
election day

Prepares the polling place for voting

Determines the eligibility of voters
-
Assists voters in the voting process

Maintains order at the polls
-
Closes polling place and remains until all
procedures are completed
When Are Elections Held
- Elections are always held on Tuesdays
- School elections
are held on the second Tuesday in September. Polls are usually open 7AM to 8 PM.
School Districts indicate their preference and may
open at Noon.
- City elections
are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of odd-numbered
years. Polls are usually open 7 AM to 8 PM. Smaller cities may open at Noon.
- Primary elections
are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June of even-numbered
years. Polls are open 7 AM to 9 PM statewide.
- General elections
are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of
even-numbered years. Polls are open 7 AM to 9 PM statewide.
- Special elections
may be called at anytime during the year and are held on Tuesday.

hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday). Our office is located in
the courthouse at 111 High Street NE in Elkader. An
application form (41.0
KB) is also available which can be mailed or e-mailed to us.
